KEMERTON EXPANSION PROJECT

On June 6th, 2023, the first shipment of modular panels for Albemarle's Kemerton Lithium Hydroxide began vessel loading at the Gangxin Heavy Equipment Port in Jiangsu Province, China. The first shipment included plant structures for Train 3, part of a four-train processing plant that will produce 100,000 metric tonnes of battery-grade lithium hydroxide annually. MMEC's scope includes shop-assembled module layers or "pancakes," secondary steel, platforms, gratings, ladders, and handrails.

The worldwide push to reduce carbon emissions and the boom in lithium storage and electric vehicle manufacturing have boosted demand for high-quality lithium and refined products from safe and reliable free-trade status sources like Australia. The Kemerton plant may process nearly 1 million tons of spodumene ore concentrate per annum, sourced from the Talison Greenbushes operation. The Kemerton plant construction is a phased approach. Phase one includes the construction, commissioning, ramp-up, and operations of two production trains capable of producing 50,000 metric tonnes of lithium hydroxide per year at total capacity. Phase two – the Kemerton Expansion Project (KEP), will double production capacity and allow for future product quality enhancement.
